ADHD Medication Names
Stimulant ADHD drugs like methylphenidate (Ritalin and Concerta) help to reduce the symptoms of ADHD by increasing the amount of hormones norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. Stimulants
Stimulants are the most commonly prescribed treatment for ADHD. They enhance focus and concentration and reduce the impulsive or hyperactive behavior. They are believed to be effective by increasing levels of dopamine, a neurotransmitter linked to reward and motivation in certain brain circuits.
Methylphenidate (MPH; Ritalin and Concerta) and dextroamphetamine-AMP (d-AMP; Adderall) are the two most common stimulants. They may temporarily increase blood pressure and heart rate, however they generally aren't harmful for most people.
Other medications could have similar effects however, they are less effective and have more serious adverse effects. MDP increases blood pressure, but it's typically not dangerous in people with normal heart health. It can also cause a rebound, where symptoms occur after the medication wears out.
Prescription stimulants are often abused either unknowingly or involuntary and can cause life-threatening, or even fatal effects. They are controlled substances, and it is illegal to use them without a prescription from a doctor or to use them in conjunction with the prescription of someone else's. Prescription stimulants can cause addiction, particularly when they are used in a way that is harmful and misused.
Stimulants can have long-term effects on growth and development. They can cause tics that are repeated sounds or movements like eye blinking or clearing the throat which can be more noticeable. They can also make people sleepy and reduce their appetite. They can cause minor growth retardation in children. This usually doesn't affect the final height.
Certain people may also experience personality changes like becoming more introverted, listless, or rigid. They can also exacerbate anxiety or depression. These medications aren't the best first line treatment for depression or anxiousness, but are often used when other drugs don't be effective.
